At HFI, we have spent some time putting together a short list of common questions our clients seem to have. If you need a question answered that you do not see on the list below, please feel to contact us. We love answering your questions and look forward to helping you real soon!

What do I need to do to qualify for (Social Security Disability Insurance) SSDI benefits?

  • Have a recent-enough work history that shows proof that you have paid into the Social Security system through FICA tax payments.
  • Have a disabling medical condition that proves you are unable to work for a minimum of up to 12 months and that you were capable of earning above the level of Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA - 2010 SGA income level is $1,000 per month and $1,640 per month for the blind and vision impaired).

How long must I be unable to work to qualify for Social Security benefits?

Your disability must have kept you from working for at least 12 months. If you are unable to work past this time frame, please contact us today and start your free pre-screen with an HFI disability advocate

How does the Social Security Administration (SSA) decide if I am disabled?

Your must meet the SSA definition of being medically disabled. SSA guidelines use a five-step process to determine the extent of a disability. SSA will also request documentation on your age, current work history, education, skill sets and work environment you have had in the past.

What if they deny my application? I know I am disabled, but what can I do?

You may be denied the first time you apply for disability benefits. If the SSA feels you did not meet their disability criteria, you do have the opportunity to appeal their decision within 60 days.

HFI’s team of disability and legal advocates will work with you to appeal your denial. When going through the appeals process, it pays to have HFI’s disability team working with you ensure your approval success.
